Guidelines for Preparation of Biographical Sketches and Other Supporting Background Materials for this Web Site :

We are aware of course that many of the speakers and panelists have very extensive professional backgrounds, published many papers, etc. However, the purpose of these biographical notes (300 word maximum please, see below) is not so much to list all their considerable accomplishments and publications, as it is to help those who are attending or considering participation in the conference to get to know something more about, not only their credentials, but also their backgrounds, character and interests than the usual formal Vitae provide. (We in fact anticipate a considerable range of styles in terms of language and ap-proach in these biographical summaries -- a healthy reflection of the variety of backgrounds and approaches which are being brought together for the purposes of this meeting.) Thus in each case, in addition to the synoptic biographical note, we are asking for:

  1. A small photograph (a headshot, in order to help us all recognize each other);

  2. A brief quotation from their own or others’ work which captures something about the spirit of their interests in and involvement with the main themes of the meeting;

  3. Two or three recommended books or sources which are felt to provide particularly interesting insights or challenges on the matters which are bringing us together, and a small note (less than 100 words) explaining why you think so.

  4. Ditto for one or several WWW sites of similar interest.

  5. If you have some additional computer readable materials from related past work and/or a short brain stretching paper on a parallel issue that can stimulate the meeting, it might be useful to consider linking it here.

In each instance where available the direct e-mail address can be noted, so that those who wish to communicate to authors comments on the papers, pose questions in advance of or during the meeting, etc. can do so conveniently. This contact can be made by directly tapping the underlined e-mail address in each case. It might also be helpful to have the Web site address and/or email references for your affiliated institution.

NOTE 1: By communicating this information, it is understood that you are authorizing consultation and use of both your vitae and abstract/paper as posted on this web site.

NOTE 2: Visitors to this site will appreciate that, given the newness of this type of conference organization, the amount of time, effort and cost that it takes to get all these details in order for so many people, and the quite large number of individuals, cultures and places invovled, what you see in this site is only a first indication of the sort of coverage that will be most appropriate for future events and projects under the electronic environment. There are, however, enough examples of vitae, backup materials, and site links here to demonstrate these princples, for them to be clear for future events such as this.

NOTE 3: We propose to append the following message to all copyright and other materials submitted for consultation in the site: This article is fully protected by author copyright. Copyright is a concept which has both legal entity and, perhaps most important to us here in The Commons, important ethical implications. It is requested that those who reference it through the electronic environment understand that these materials are being generously donated and shared, and that it is up to us all to respect fully the author's (and eventually the publisher's) rights to their own (hard) work. If you use it, kindly do it within the respected traditions for this sort of intellectual property, and of course always attribute the portions used to the original author.
