British Columbia Ministry of Environment, Lands and Parks

The Ministry's vision is "An environment that is naturally diverse and healthy and enriches people’s lives". Transportation is critical to achieving this vision, because of its significant potential impact on land use, and on the quality of land, water, and air. In the past two years, the Ministry has had a strong focus on reducing the air emissions impacts of transportation, and has been involved in several key activities including: i) developing legislation and regulations for cleaner vehicles and fuels to meet the same low-emission vehicle standards as California by 2001, ii) promoting transportation alternatives that reduce emissions, such as walking, cycling, ridesharing, transit and telecommuting, iii) supporting regional air planning, and its linkage to land use and transportation planning in urban growth areas, and iv) co-sponsoring a national conference on sustainable transportation held in Vancouver in October 1995.
