Cornix was founded in 1989 by Richard Field and Stephen Simmons offering practical solutions to the questions arising from flexible work methods (including teleworking and location independent working) which were then first being enabled by new technologies and advanced communications, and specialising in the impact of these methods on small business development. It has wide experience in telework and e-commerce methods; in regional development strategy issues; in the specific characteristics and needs of the SME sector particularly including micro-businesses and sole traders; and in issues relating to sustainable development, to quality of life, and to new patterns of settlement arising from IST implementation.
The Cornix staff of six are headed by its director, Stephen Simmons. Stephen Simmons gained a BSc (Hons) Engineering in 1971 and was elected Chartered Engineer also in 1971 and Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts in 1994. Reporting directly to the director are the department heads, Niki Groves and Suze White.
Mr. Stephen Simmons, a British citizen, is an honours graduate of the University of London in Civil Engineering. He was elected Chartered Engineer in 1972 and Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts in 1994. His current work is in e-work implementation within the micro-SME sector, with particular relevance to socio-economic questions (e.g. quality of life, and sustainability). He is Managing Director of Addico Cornix Ltd, Chief Executive of the U.K. National Association of Teleworking, and the author of Flexible Working (Kogan Page) (London 1996), Editor Regional Research Networks (E.C.) 1995 and Editor, Small Business Networks (E.C.) 1996. He was a partner in the ASIS Alliance for a Sustainable Information Society, contributing SME-related scenarios and perspectives, and is technical co-ordinator for the ASSIST study of consumption substitution by immaterial IST.
Niki Groves joined Cornix in 1992. She has a background in publishing and in SoHo market products. She handles the commercial and design aspects of publications and written output generally, and is also in overall charge of local telework projects related to economic development where she co-ordinates the work of Cornix's field based staff.
Suze White is a graduate of the London College of Dance and Drama who ran her own design business from 1979-1994 prior to joining Cornix. She is currently responsible for handling accounts, for administration and for networking and has day-to-day control of research-based activities, and of the procurement of reports and research from third parties, and is in overall charge of the management of E.C. projects.
Cornix has taken part in projects in various E.C. programmes starting with RACE and was most recently a partner in the ASIS project (on sustainability aspects of IST) of the ACTS (IVth framework) programme. It has also recently been involved in: -
- Facilitation of the MoU on Open Access to Electronic Commerce for SMEs
- Publication of the European Journal of Teleworking.
- Publications related to e-work; to Regional Economic Development; and to the links between e-work and sustainability.
Completed or completing projects undertaken recently include MAESTRO (ACTS), TEMPLE (TELEMATICS), and DIPLOMAT (ACTS) for which latter Stephen Simmons provided external expert advice.
