  • 23 August 2007: This group is just starting to form up. It is going to be a very strong one, and will we can safely anticipate be proving some rather controversial views and alternative thinking about how to make cycling succeed in cities as one of the key part of the new mobility environment

We provide some first profiles here mainly as an example for the others who are thinking about possibly getting involved. Come back in a week or two to see a more complete listing.

In the meantime to get a feel for the discussions behind this particular Brief, we invite you to click here to the Work Pad entry and initial working matierals on and group discussions of our topic.

Eric Britton, The Commons and the New Mobility Agenda

Eric Britton studied physics in university and then went on to a PhD program in economics, but has in fact worked professionally in neither area. His life interest is doing something about the better management of technology as it effects us ordinary people in our daily lives, which brought him early to the challenges of sustainable mobility. Over his career he has been a devoted supporter and at times a prickly friend of those charged formally with advancing the sustainability agenda. Eric led a proposed full function cycle plan for the city of Paris in 1974, which quickly and firmly ended up in a drawer in the commissioning ministry. He cycles aggressively around Paris as his main means of transport, and really should provide a better example for young people. (Eric will work as rapporteur and secretary for the panel.)

Saskia Hermans, Planner, France and the Netherlands

Saskia Hermans arrived on the Cöte d'Azur in the beginning of 2003. Coming from the densely populated and meticulously planned Netherlands Saskia immediately realized how much could be improved on the traffic planning and transport system of the Riviera. She actively joined local advocacy groups/associations on sustainable development. Graduated as an architect from the Delft school of Architecture, she now works as specialist on cycle planning for the regional government. Previously she has worked as an urban designer and on integrating sustainability in local planning in both Holland and France.
