There are always two, at least, sides to a quarrel. And while you have on this site a great deal of information and opinion that reflects the strong concerns of sustainability and social justice, that is admittedly not the only way of looking at these things.

So here is where we provide a tribune which gives those who may hold other positions on all this an opportunity to make their point. We do this in the spirit of democracy, diversity and equal time -- and firm in the knowledge that far the best thing to do is to let them say their piece without editing or commentary. So this is what you have here. (You may need the plug-ins which you can download at no cost here.)

Here are a few excerpts from one such recent communications effort, which we quote here exactly in the hope of encouraging you to go on to get the whole story:

  • "Environmentalists are telling us how to live our lives . . . preventing us from driving cars, and forcing us to live downtown," he says. "In America, these are still personal choices."

  • "We just want to try to wake up the citizens of Georgia to let them know certain groups are influencing public policy that affects their lives," said Therol Brown, executive director of the Georgia Highway Contractors Association. "If people don't want to drive automobiles, fine - but that's a people choice. Don't let it be forced on people by public policy."

  • "Environmentalists want you to have the option of driving your automobile less" said Wesley Woolf, an attorney with the Southern Environmental Law Center. "They are entirely misrepresenting it, for the economic gain of that limited special interest."

  • "We think very, very strongly that additional highways are a part of congestion mitigation," Brown said. "Additional cars on the road dictate you have additional capacity."

Help wanted
Pehaps we should be thinking about awarding some sort of international prize on Earth Car Free Day for the most striking of these information efforts. Your views?

There has to be lots of this kind of thing on the waves out there, and it cannot do any harm for us to be able to have quick access to it. And here is where you can share your leads with us.
