Tokyo Car Free Day 2000

Summary

The Tokyo Car Free Day 2000 Committee organized a Car Free Day for September 22 and 23 of this year. The event commences September 22 and is to last through September 23 (as the latter is a public holiday in Japan).

The coordinators have made an effort to establish car free zone in some area in Tokyo, but finally had to give up because local authorities would not agree to stop any road traffic in Tokyo, even for a one day event. However they are planning to carry out some events campaigning Car Free Day as follows:

  • Pedestrians parade --expecting more than 2,000 participants along the Loop Railway Line. (Sept. 23)

  • Demonstration parade, namely Rainbow Walk -- campaigning environmental issues and human rights. (Sept. 23)

  • Concert, bazaar and poster session presented by NGOs. (Sept. 23)

  • Conference comprising of panel discussion and live relay show over Internet from some European city on Car Free event (Sept. 22 evening, utilizing time difference between Europe and Japan)

  • Announcement of launching transportation NGOs network (SUSTRAN Japan).

  • Publishing magazine featuring motorization and environmental issues.
(Note: As soon as their Web site is on line we will link to it, which will give you a chcnce to practice your Japanese.)
