World CarShare Surveys

WC/S 2005 Group Auto-Survey Nelson\Nygaard TRB Survey IEEP Marketing Surveys Previous Surveys

As carsharing advances on the ground, we are seeing a growing wave of surveys that are trying to map what is going on, where, why, etc. Here are a few of the latest of these:

2005 WC/S Surveys

In June of this year we launched a pair of low-key auto-surveys to see what it is they and you have to say about (a) the state of carsharing in your city and your own life from a user perspective, (b) that state of the art as seen from the vantage of the C/SOs, and more generally (c) about where we here in The Commons should be looking to be most useful to advance the carshare agenda over the remainder of this decade. There are thus two surveys in this little series: one covering users, the other C/S operators.

We consider this to be a valuable tool for everyone interested in making a success of carsharing. (Though until this date, 7 August, the response has been 'carshare lite'. Hmm.) For details on both, please click here:

Nelson\Nygaard TRB Survey (North America)

From: Adam Millard-Ball, amillard-ball@nelsonnygaard.com
Nelson\Nygaard Consulting Associates.
Transportation Planning for Livable Communities. USA
Date: Wed Jul 14, 2004
Subject: Partner Organizations - please help and complete a survey

Nelson\Nygaard is currently leading the Transportation Research Board-funded study of car-sharing, and where and how it succeeds. A particular focus of our research is on the role of partner organizations, such as municipalities, developers, transit agencies, regional and state agencies, and many more public, private and nonprofit organizations.

We are currently conducting an online survey of representatives of North American partner organizations that support - or plan to support - car-sharing in some way. This may be publicity, parking provision, funding, planning support, regulatory changes, or some other means. We are seeking to explore issues such as the nature of your support, the goals which your organization hopes to achieve, and techniques for evaluation and monitoring.

Please also note that the survey is for North American organizations only. If you are involved in any of these ways, please take the survey at: http://www.carsharepartners.org/carsharepartners.htm It should take between 5 and 20 minutes to complete, depending on your organization's involvement, and your willingness to answer (optional) open ended questions.

. . . We want to give everyone as full access to the responses as possible, and we certainly want to ensure that the report provides a valuable resource to those to give their time and information. For (reasons of confidentiality of information from individual operators), we have guaranteed that results (both from this survey, a survey of individual members, and focus groups) will be reported in aggregate only, without identifying a specific operator.

IEEP Marketing Surveys

From: Dawn Haines, IEEP
Institute for European Environmental Policy, UK
Date: Fri Aug 6, 2004
Subject: Mobility Services Questionnaires

The IEEP is carrying out some research on the types of marketing strategies adopted by carshare schemes to help raise awareness of them to users. Accordingly I have put together a questionnaire (in three languages) that I would be very grateful if any co-ordinators of schemes would have the time to fill in.

The results of the research will of course be made available to the group upon completion.

If you want to know what is going on in the world of carsharing, here is an opportunity to do your homework before venturing further. There are some fine materials here, and you owe it to yourself to give them your closest attention before putting pen to paper for your own survey. No sense in rediscovering the wheel. Eh?
