Einstein Learning Games

While many of us are well aware of the extraordinary potential of the new media (computers, telecommunications, Internet, CDs, et al.) for teaching and learning, we are also too often horrified to see the ways in which these technologies are being mindless used and abused in homes as well in schools. And yet the potential is so very great.

The goal of this component of the Einstein program will be to provide information on and something along the lines of a "seal of approval" for learning games, computer based and other, which stretch the minds and excite the curiosity of the user in ways which are consonant with the overall thrust of this program. Our approach in this will be as follows.

  1. We will in the weeks ahead improve our articulation and statement of the program, and then make it known through the media and direct contact campaigns to companies, groups and individuals that are developing learning games of this type, who will then be invited to send two copies of their wares here for examination.
  2. These will be then examined here and sent to one or two schools or volunteers for their views and suggestions.
  3. Those which are judged as being consistent with our objective will be listed here in this site, along with full contact and purchase information.
  4. No games will be considered that cost more than $20.00 (though if the suppliers are willing to cut their price to permit special purchases through this informal network, they will of course be considered).
  5. Freeware and shareware will be given particular attention.

While awaiting our own progress on this, we would refer you in the meantime to the considered recommendations of the Latitude Schoolhouse, a fine place to begin your search.

A First Round of Sources and Ideas

The following listing was taken from an AltaVista search using the keywords "learning games", sorted quickly from a total of about 800 regurgitated titles (of which approximately 200 of what were thought to be the most promising were scanned.) They are offered to you here not with our recommendations, but as a proposed learning drill.

The very extensive nature of this first quick search suggests to us a warning: there is obviously a huge amount of material out there that advertises itself as appropriate, most of which not at all in line with the objectives and philosophy of Einstein. Hence, our approach will be one which is highly selective, not attempting to generate long lists of candidates of varying quality, but a relatively small number of programs that we and others have look at closely and found to be appropriate as convivial learning tools.
