3. Distance Learning Reviews -- Some First Results of a Sample Search

Below you will find the results of the first page of a trial run of a search made using Excite (http://www.excite.com), under the key words "distance learning". This is reproduced here at this time by way of example only and offered to encourage you to undertake such searches on your own. Our ultimate objective here, however, is not to compile a long list (which you can see from the following is hardly a problem) but rather to provide a linked inventory to especially thoughtful and useful sources and programs.

Globewide Network Academy Review: Online education, or learning via your computer, is presented here by consortium of educational and research organizations in this comprehensive catalog of online courses and degree programs.

Mind Extension University
Review: Snappy click-on graphics guide you through this mind-boggling maze of educational services. The bottom line is simple. This university offers college-credit courses through affiliated schools. Your TV set and VCR are the classroom. You can even earn a degree through this program, and you won't have to worry about the professor busting you for falling asleep in class.

National Technology University

Review: Instead of using your satellite dish to pirate sumo wrestling championships, you could be using it to get an advanced technical education from this private, accredited Fort Collins, Colorado school. At the moment, it is offering 1300 courses from nearly 50 U.S. engineering schools leading to 13 M.S. degrees.

The Graduate School of America

Review: Quite a full plate from this Minneapolis division of Learning Ventures. The "distance learning school" offers M.S. and Ph.D. programs in management, education, human services and interdisciplinary studies to mid-career professionals who want to continue working while they do this.

Greenleaf University

Review: Though at times a little heavy on the jargon, this is nevertheless a fairly comprehensive online presentation for a St. Louis-based distance-learning institution that targets mid-career professionals in leadership and administration. Drop in here to look into coursework and to get some background on the project and its founder, Robert K. Greenleaf, the "father of empowerment management."

The Roane State Community College On-line Writing Lab

Review: Thumbs up to this good-looking site designed for specific courses at the East Tennessee school's several campuses. Some areas appear to be restricted, but the top-notch links to similar programs at other institutions is free to all scriveners.
University of Louisville Distance Education Program
Review: This Kentucky school offers you a way to get your college education without leaving home. Find out more here or use links to the rest of the university and its libraries.

Auburn University Montgomery (AUM)

Review: AUM's Continuing Education series offers an unusual selection of certificate programs that include legal, executive and teacher assistant, basic management, concepts of interior decorating and others. Montgomery, Alabama residents can also tune into AUM-TV for the latest goings-on around campus and calendar of events.

Review: Internet 101 is now in session, with the course evaluation being an informative overview of what this medium is and what it has to offer. Aimed at students, specifically graduate students.

California Coast University

Review: This Santa Ana, California school is dedicated to serving mid-career professionals who are seeking a non-residential, distance learning, degree completion program. Find out about the school, their programs, and general info on long distance learning.

California Pacific University

Review: Earn a business administration or management degree without the hassle of getting to class. You still, however, have to do all the work. California Pacific, in San Diego, offers off-campus, distance learning programs that are geared toward the goals of working adults.

City University

Review: This private, non-profit institution based in Bellevue, Washington has been offering decentralized coursework for over two decades. Now they take the idea one step further by offering courses that can be completed on the Net. Visit their splashy Web site to find out more.

Compass in Cyberspace

Review: Introduction to the Internet courses developed and taught by John Makulowich which are offered in the flesh at the University of Maryland in Rockville, Maryland and at several online sites. The enrollment forms are right here.

Courses and Studies by Email

Review: Now you've heard it all, right? Well, not quite. The additional catch is that you have to know French first before completing any of the coursework. Everything from mathematics to German is offered.

Intec College

Review: Once called a correspondence school, this "distance education" center in Capetown, South Africa allows students to study at home. Courses offered in computing, technical vocations, and business management, as well as arts and humanities. Interactive form allows visitors to match their interests with career path.

International University College

Review: "Join the Learning Revolution!" That's the come-on for this virtual university that runs distance learning courses using the Internet, cable television and video tapes. As regards the pressing issue of accreditation (which they've filed for): no decision, we're told, can be made until IUC has actually awarded degrees.

Ken Brownson's Home Page

Review: It used to be called correspondence school. Ken calls it "distance education." That's how he completed his degree. Now he works for his own company, Adult Education Resource, which helps those too busy to attend traditional classes find distance learning schools.

Magellan University

Review: Is cyber-schooling in your future? Sometime late in 1996, this Tucson, Arizona university will begin operation, offering classes via video, personal computer, and the Internet. Students will have access to online tutors; can do the work anytime, anywhere, and do it for what the school says will be a modest cost. However, accreditation is not mentioned.

MIMS Flextime Program

Review: One way the Net is reshaping education is on display at this University of Texas at Dallas site. Students in the Masters of International Studies program take their courses over the Net from wherever they are in the world. The program and the technology of this interesting experiment are explained here.

The New School for Social Research/Distance Learning

Review: You can get a B.A. online via the New School's Distance Instruction for Adult Learners (DIAL) Program. The Distance Learning program for The New School for Social Research in New York, allows students to connect via their computer. Site offers lots of info on the program.

OnLine Education

Review: This electronic university, based in Hong Kong and somehow affiliated with Scotland's University of Paisley, claims to have bypassed traditional barriers to study by designing programs that can be accessed from anywhere in the world, and at any time.

Open University of the United Kingdom

Review: This one's a little different -- it comes to you (at least the course materials do). There are more than 218,000 people currently studying with the university. Links explain pretty well what to expect.

Stratford Career Institute Home Page

Review: All of you out there who complained that school was not based on developing real-world skills should check this out. Go to the Virtual Auditorium, download the software and enroll in this totally online institution.

TEAMSnet

Review: A live, televised distance learning service, administered by the Los Angeles County Office of Education (LACOE). TEAMS programs are telecast from the ETN studios at LACOE in Downey, California and rebroadcast in many areas by Public Television stations and Cable companies. Find out more, here.

UMass Amherst's Video Instructional Program

Review: This set of courses on videotape from the University of Massachusetts offers continuing education for engineers. Find correspondence courses in many engineering disciplines described here.

University Without Walls at the University of Massachusetts

Review: Founded in 1971, the University Without Walls adult undergraduate degree program of UMass, offers BS and BA degrees. Check the new Weekend@UWW programs which combine a weekend a month on the Amherst campus plus teaching and discussions via the Internet.. Serving students in most fields available at the University, UWW offers individualized degrees which may be similar to majors offered by other departments or may be interdisciplinary in nature. UWW students earn a B.A. or B.S. degree depending on the program they design.

Virtual Online University

Review: This university, which has applied for accreditation, has a Missouri mailing address but exists in cyberspace. It is run by a non-profit corporation and teaches courses over the Web. Find a course catalog and sign-up info here.

Virtual School Review: George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia, offers on-line courses designed to help professionals conquer the electronic frontier. The courses however do not give college credit toward a Masters or Undergraduate degree.

Welcome to CyberEd Review: University credited courses run by UMass at Dartmouth over the Internet are technical and computer based. You have to be able to use the technology. They claim it will rival classroom teaching. See the floorplan with seminar rooms, chat areas, etc.
