Machine Translation II: Babel Fish

We have been assiduous users of AltaVista's Babel Fish (Systran) for several years now. Like Gist, it allows you to translate Web sites between specific pairs of languages. We have decided to try working in the ECFD program with Gist, since it seems to provide us with a better fit. But we still can heartily recommend Babel Fish and Systran, and shall be keeping a close eye on their progress in the months ahead.

Babel Fish is a free, automatic translation service that removes language barriers across the World Wide Web. It can help you send and receive Email, participate in bulletin boards and clubs, browse international Web sites, or search for information. View the site in its original language side-by-side with the translation.

Babel Fish translates these language to and from English:

Chinese
French
German
Italian
Japanese
Korean
Portuguese
Spanish

And between these additional language pairs:

Russian to English
German to French
French to German

Use Babel Fish to:

Translate text passages up to about forty sentences at a time.
Translate entire Web sites ( Sites that use standard grammar and language (like newspapers) translate best.)
Read French, German, or Italian search results in English.
