This phrase of course is an ironic commentary on the commercial practices of the IOC, World Cup, Visa, Coke and whatever other high point of international consumerism, citizen passivity, and psycho-venality that you might know or possibly imagine.

By contrast to those tightly organized, manipulative, interest-driven operations, the Buy Nothing movement is a sprawling, disparate, diversified, 100% anarchistic self-organizing system. Nobody tells anyone else what to do (and even if they did it is unlikely that any of these people would listen and obey). That's the state of play in the BND movement around the planet -- like it or not.

On the other hand there are lots of good reasons why all these independent, hard headed, spread out, disparate groups and operations can do well to keep in touch with each other. One way that our @World BND project is trying to chip in and do its part is by adding to and, to the extent possible, sharpening and improving these multi-directional communications links.
