  • As anyone who has ever been directly involved in a Car Free Day project worth its salt can tell you, there is a great deal more to making a successful event than just roping off a few blocks of the city for a few tepid hours, parading about on a bike in a high profile once-in-a-year mode, and then smoothly declaring victory. What we need are well planned, strong projects that are going to make a difference -- not just for that one day but for the entire longer term development of the movement system in that city.

To this end we have decided to see what can be done to identify and highlight a certain of "best practices" when it comes to planning and making these projects work. To give you a flavor of the sort of things we are looking for, we provide several examples which you can view by clicking on the "Examples" link just to your left.

As part of our 2001 Challenge we intend to look for striking accomplishments in the categories listed just to the left, and invite you to share with the group your suggestions.

Some of these files may require specific software to be viewed. Viewers allow you to read documents and images created with a particular word-processor or graphics package even if you don't have the software concerned. Here are a few of the ones you are most likely to need here:

real RealPlayer - for audio and videos.

get_shockwave_flash Shockwave - for some videos.

Adobe Acrobat Reader - for PDF files.

To view PowerPoint documents you may need the MS PowerPoint Viewer (also free).
