Roelof Wittink is managing director of I-ce Interface for Cycling Expertise. The mission of I-ce is: "By sharing its expertise on cycling policy and applying it for each different situation in the best ways suitable, I-ce aims to create an environment in which people all over the world can enjoy the many benefits of cycling". I-ce is a not for profit, non governmental organisation. Roelof Wittink has a record of 20 years experience in Road Safety Research. Working at the Dutch Road Safety research Institute SWOV, he was a.o.:

  • - Member of the OECD research groups on Behavioral Change and on Social Marketing
  • - Co-ordinator of the EU project PROMISING that developed safety measures for vulnerable road users that are non restrictive to efficient mobility
  • - In Delhi: faculty member of the International Course on Prevention and Control of Traffic Accidents and Injuries at the Indian Institute of Technology.

The history and current planning for traffic and transport prioritises car transport and leave cyclists and pedestrians with ''protective" measures that are restrictive with respect to efficient and comfortable mobility. Car free days contribute to a critical review of the transport planning that should lead to treating cycling and walking as fully fledged modes of transport
