Although we really do appreciate getting paid for our hard work, it coming in rather handy to pay our bills at the end of the month, the main objective of this project and indeed the entire flow of programs, projects and collaboration behind the New Mobility Agenda is to do what we can to inspire, create and support first class low carbon, high equity, economically vital transport anywhere in the world. That's our job.
We are firm believers in the environmental, life quality and economic potential of well designed and carefully implemented city bike systems. They are great at what they can do, and even more important in terms of the other innovations and changes that they set off and support. And in this spirit we have recently placed a bet of ten thousand dollars with several international colleagues to the effect that the world will see at least one thousand operational city bike projects between now and 2010. Moreover, our bet is that the net environmental and climate impact of these projects will far exceed the combined contribution that is made by new technology motors and new fuels in this period. Ten thousand United States Dollars. (Any more takers?) This means that even if the report and support program you have presented here in this site is not going to be appropriate in all cases, we feel that the least we can do for all those who lack the confidence or funding to get directly involved in our project, is to put before them the best of the references, materials and contacts known to us so that they can in turn examine and put them together to support their own initiatives. It is in this spirit that we offer you this city-bike workbook in the section you find here.
What we have tried to pull together for you here is a compendium of web sites, links and references that if you take the time and trouble to examine and put to work will help you to develop a first class understanding of how these city bike projects are working in a fast growing number of places around the world. We estimate that if you give over anywhere from fifty to one hundred or so hours to these materials you will have covered the basic ground very well indeed. You are ready to start thinking about it in your city. And while the information that you find here does not per se take you the necessary extra step - that of putting this all together in the framework of a workable program for a full scale, multi-part new mobility system -- we can offer additional sites and counsel that can help you in this, in the event that your city has not yet worked out all the very numerous various bits and pieces for itself. As good a starting point as any is our Reinventing Transport in Cities project at http://www.invent.newmobility.org. But now let's have a quick look at what you will find here if you click the two links under this heading in the menu just to your left.
