  • Each of the dozen-plus focus discussion groups under The Commons and the New Mobility Agenda maintains its own extensive message forum, and while most of the participants usually think of them as handy vehicles for one-time mailings, each collection in fact provides a database, often with considerable depth of information, leads and perspectives on its topics. The goal of the Search engine in each case is to see if we can make better and broader use of this stock of information and opinion. Let's have a quick look.

Example: Searching the New Mobility Idea Factory

This section takes the New Mobility Idea Factory which you can reach directly and in full context if you click the Idea Factory link on the top menu of the home page at http://www.newmobility.org or by clicking here to go directly to the Message Archives for that program.

Here are some quick guidelines to help you in your search:

    1. Basic display
You have three choices for the basic display, which you can call up by activating the respective links under the "Messages" menu, top left, grouping the items depending upon your individual preference.

    1. Simple: Shows only the subject lines. This is the most compact view.
    2. Summary: Shows the subject line and the first part of the message. You can use this to quickly scan the conversation.
    3. Expanded: Shows each of the messages in full form, on top or each other.

    2. Sorting messages:
You can sort all messages by date (in either direction). You can also identify a message if you happen to know its unique message number.

    3. Searching by keywords:
For this there are two variants:

    Simple:
Thus "road" will call up all postings in which the phrase appears, "Stockholm" ditto, "road-pricing" (don't forget the hyphen, otherwise use quoatation marks) calls up all references to the phrase, while "road pricing" and "Stockholm" will call up all postings in which both phrases appear.

Users can include quotation marks (but make sure to actually type the quotation marks rather than copying them from a webpage; "curly quotes" don't work). However, Yahoo! Groups advanced search does not currently recognize Boolean terms, such as "+" , "-" and "OR".

    Advanced:
The more complete Search engine explains itself.
