Earth Car Free Day 2001 is a joint public interest initiative of The Commons and Earth Day Network, who have joined forces to their best to inspire and support the world wide web of activities that make up the great Day.

The Commons

The Commons initiated its Car Free Cities program in 1988 as an activist model for citizen-led sustainable
development. That thread of activity lead to the World Car Free Day Consortium, with the first Thursday plan announced in Toledo Spain in 1994. The February 2000 CFD project in partnership with the City of Bogota, and supported by a high level international network bringing together hundreds of people, experts and groups around the world, was awarded the prestigious Stockholm Challenge Prize for Environment.

Earth Day Network

The Earth Day Network bring a great deal to this challenging planetary venture
with its developed international eco-networks and its thirty years of commitment and successful experience in organizing Earth Day projects. This year Earth Day Network has banded together with other international activist groups to mount six major clean energy campaigns, one of which this first cooperative Earth Car Free Day led by The Commons.

Make yourself known!

We are aiming to have hundreds of groups and many more individuals around the world taking an active part in these preparations and events. This is the place to let us know if you are going to join the team, or have suggestions as to other people or groups whom we should be contacting to ensure this success of this terrific challenge.
