J.H. Crawford founded Carfree.com in 1996, to introduce the carfree city concept and to provide a locus for a critical discussion of this and related ideas. In 1997 he started publication of the on-line newsletter, Carfree Times.

In March 2000 he published Carfree Cities, a book that explores the why, what, and how of carfree cities. He believes that while the environmental and energy problems of cars might some day be solved, the social and aesthetic problems posed by cars cannot be solved by any plausible application of technology. He therefore established a detailed "reference design" for a hypothetical carfree city.

Since publication of the book, he has occupied himself primarily with the question: how do we implement carfree cities in the real world? The answers are as complex as the problem, and each city will have to find its own way of adapting the basic concepts to its specific needs and problems. He believes that carfree days, properly implemented, are a way to show citizens both the pleasure and the practicality of carfree urban life.

Mr. Crawford is leading the Carfree.com efforts to support for the preparations and the planned April 19th events, inclduing working with their discussion list, networks adn newsletter to get the word out. For further background on Crawford click here.
