Estragon: That wasn't such a bad little canter
Vladimir: Yes, but we'll have to find something else now.
- Waiting for Godot, Samuel Becket, 1955
There are many ways of looking at the challenges of how we might go about organizing work in the 21st century. Or rather how we must go about it! One of the goals of @Work on the Web is to identify and test the full range of these concepts and eventual arrangements-- in an attempt to make sure somehow that there are not some very alternatives out there that somehow we are not benefiting from in this time of such great need.
After some years of work and reflection on this subject, we have developed a certain number of ideas and proposals of our own on these matters (most of which in fact have come from other sources and not our own inherent and unique genius), which are summarized in this Quick Tour. The following are presented here in this synoptic form for your information and above all for your comments and suggestions. Most of what follows has been extracted from the original 1993 Rethinking Work "thinking exercise" and the interim 1998 edition, and of course all the exchanges and work that went into them.
If any of what follows captures your attention, we invite you to turn to @Work Library where you can download copies of either edition. None of this is intended to be anything more at this point than a challenge to your (and our) thinking. We invite critical comments and suggestion either privately or, preferably, via the Group Mail discussion facility. Better yet, this may led to your own essay or thinkpiece which can be posted in turn for the others to react to and discuss. It is in this way that we intend to build up a strong repertory of ideas and leads for all to consult and use.
