Day-by-Day: Archives

Events & Accomplishments of the Conference

This archive of the events and accomplishment of the conference to date has been drawn up to serve the courageous minority of those of you who are determined to get full value out of their use of this site. You can either dash through it to get a quick overview of the flow of activities and critical remarks on progress and setbacks, or alternatively take a bit of time and do it the right way. In the latter instance, we recommend that you give a look at the fairly large number of Web sites that have been brought to the attention of our visitors. You may learn some surprising things about the zero emissions and sustainable development themes, and it may lead you to take a rather different view of this new, this often intriguing, and, of course, sometimes infuriating new technology.

Put into a deeper historical context, perhaps today with PCs, phone links of various qualities and a relentless swarm of new software and hardware gadgets, we are in a similar position to the book 'industry' back in the eleventh century when, more often than not, the ink just wouldn't stay on the page, or the page would wither away, or the binding would give up altogether. Must have been terribly frustrating. And yet... and yet.

  • May we suggest that you check out the conference library again? Among other interesting things, you will find that a complete zipped copy of the entire site (html pages and graphics) has now been uploaded, providing you with an opportunity to run and experiment with the site at higher speeds than most usually have access to on the Net. Of course, to link to anything else, you will need to activate your modem; but as a learning and fast review device it is quite handy.

  • Balance of Accomplishment of Week 3:

As indicated last week, what we are seeing is continuing development of what is turning into a first class conferencing facility, but we are not yet getting the level of interaction that is needed. For various reasons (which are well known to those who are familiar to the Web and newsgroups more generally) most visitors prefer just to lurk and see, without actively joining in. It is our challenge to find ways to break this impasse.

The Virtual Weekend, 30-31 August 1997:

Weekend Web Detours: Adbusters. Are you satisfied that your personal behavior is in line with the concerns of this meeting and the issues and challenges of sustainable development more generally. Most of us probably should be giving more thought to the implications of our personal actions and daily life habits. What to we chose to do? Where to travel to and how? How much of anything do we really need? Adbusters ("The shining hope for a revolution in human consciousness lies in the actions of everyday people") may irritate you in some of these respects. And if it doesn't you can always try the American Dream ("Changing consumption patterns can allow the world's poorest people a fairer share of the earth's resources and the opportunity to achieve an adequate standard of living.") Or The Web Of Simplicity (" tools for those who are serious about learning to live a more conscious, simple, healthy and earth-friendly lifestyle.") Bon appetit!

    Week 5 of the Conference:

    Monday, 1 September 1997

Today's Web Detour: ICQ (I Seek You) Could the more computer intrepid of you give a visit to this small Israeli company and have a look at what they're offering (for free, it's a beta). The program runs in the background, taking up minimal memory and Net resources. While you work with other applications, ICQ alerts you when associates log in, allowing you to work efficiently while maintaining a wide range of Internet functions at your fingertips. Among the functions available are: chat, message, e-mail, whiteboarding, data conferencing, and URL and file transfer. It supports a variety of Internet applications and serves as a Universal Platform from which you can launch any peer- to- peer application (such as Microsoft NetMeeting or Netscape CoolTalk). It can also be used in a multiple-user mode, so groups can conduct conferences on-line. This is a very handy utility, and we would much like to see if we can get at least some of the people at the conference using this as a supplement to the other technologies we are trying to integrate into this shared work environment.

Today's Web Detour: Solstice Solstice is the Internet information service of the Center for Renewable Energy and Sustainable Technology (CREST):"your site for Sustainable Energy and Development Information". Highly recommended! (Lot more attractive and easier to access than we are. But still, we are doing our bit and there is plenty of work to do for all available willing hands. Don't you think?)

    __ Tools of the Conference

Now that we've completed our review of the main general introductory materials, may we suggest that we now move on to a quick review of the Tools of the Conference. We would like to assure you that this will be time well spent. (The Web aces can race through the first pages of this, but the rest of us should profit from the review. And when and if it begins to be too much for you, just punch this button and have a tranquil look again at Mount Fuji.)
