The Centre for Community and Enterprise Networking (C\CEN), of the University College of Cape Breton is sponsoring a two day and one-half day workshop on the current status and future prospects of using Information and Communications Technology for Local Economic Development. The Workshop will examine how community access to the Internet can help non-metropolitan areas become full and equal participants in the global information economy. Thursday, October 16th -- Saturday October 18th, 1997.

We'll be putting together a resource kit for distribution at the Workshop and we'll include your URL...

BTW it is a very nice and comprehensive site...

My name is Dr.Horst W.Doelle. At present I am Chairman of IOBB [International Organisation for Biotechnology and Bioengineering] as well as Director of the MIRCEN [Microbiological Resources Centre]-Biotechnology Brisbane and the Pacific Regional Network. I have been teaching for over 30 years at the University in microbiology/biochemistry as well as in areas such as fermentation technology and microbial biotechnology. I have attended and organised over 20 ICRO/Unesco training courses on microbial process development for waste and renewable resource utilisation using clean technologies. The latest course just finished in Thailand on Re-utilisation of Agro-Industrial Wastes for sustainability and development.

I am very interested and have published many articles on socio-economic biotechnology using integrated biosystems, using waste utilisation for obtaining the energy producing value-added products from either renewable resources or residual solid and liquid wastes. My main thrust in the teaching is in the Pacific Region and SEAsia.

Looking forward to participate in this conference

Yours, Horst Doelle, Chairman, IOBB, Fax: +617-38783230

Subject: hydropower technology

An interesting paper because it offers an alternative to the ecological problems caused by large dams. But incomplete because the statements about "low cost" are not documented. This technology substitutes hydrofoil powered pumping for the static pressure of high dams. I cannot see how the cost for a complex mechanical system is comparable. What would a 500 MW hydrofacilty cost compared to a traditional dam?

I suggest that such papers should not be accepted for this forum without more explicit documentation of the cost effectiveness.

Stellar Processes

Subject: Some critical comments and reflections on your Web site

I am trying to follow step by step the live Conference on Zero Emissions. Let me tell you that I feel that your effort has been enormous by judging from the final product I have seen. (Next time there should be some virtual sharing of the work load and I do not refer only to the editorial job but also to the design of pages, overall checking of details, preparing properly documents for upload and the tens of tasks which are invisible to the person getting to the site.)

Two impromptu comments about missing links that you may wish to have a look to:

1.- In the peripheral section: Einstein On Line - Error - while the American Dream had no response.

2.- I have tried to read your Sept 2 piece "Where do we go from here? to no avail. Just "Prime Host error Not Found"

I have read quickly the piece by Carol Brouillet. Personally I like it as very provoking and I wonder how are people's reaction as to how if fits in the conference proper.

Overall, I can offer just my sympathy at this point as I realize how much work and effort you have put into it. I can see not only that the Conference is a success but that you are getting ahead towards a true Seminar format with many to many discussions as some of the experts have suggested. Terrific.

I have found the UNU conferences to be most helpful/enlightening. Although, a lurker, the information is useful to me in my daily interactions with members of the lay community.

In the past, many conferences have been presented in email list format. Is that also true with this effort? I didn't see a pointer to such a list.

Thank you

Subject: Conference

Thank you for your message regarding the zero emissions conference. We were actually recommended to visit the site and pass the message along (which we have done) by a UNEP consultant in Japan a couple of weeks ago.

I hope the conference is going well and that you are managing to have international representation.

Best regards,Laura Williamson, EnTA Programme

Please register Philip Enros for the virtual conference.

Address: Science Policy, Environment Canada, 351 St. Joseph, 7th floor, Hull, Quebec K1A 0H3, Canada Email: philip.enros@ec.gc.ca

My main interest is in science policy, particularly in the environmental area. I am currently especially interested in articulating the meaning of "science for sustainable development" and would like to hear of attempts to do this.

OSI is responsible for developing a "customer based" organization, testing and implementation of new methods of operating (business methods, not engineering), development of a new strategic vision and serving as the organization's conscience for future trends. Specifically interested in this forum for insights in what is coming that is not immediately foreseeable.

As Bob Ayres may remember, I am interested in U.S. and world oil/energy use in the transportation sector. Your project and your method of making it known to people around the world is very exciting.

I wonder how you feel about biomass ethanol (from switchgrass or fast-growing trees) as a sustainable motor fuel. It has many supporters in the U.S. but I am uncertain how biomass fuel is viewed elsewhere.

I wish you the best success in your project and I hope I will be able to continue to follow your activities.

P.S. I still have a copy of the world transportation energy model Bob built for me about 20 years ago!

Subject: The Sustainable Development Conference

Thanks for the invitation to join you and the other conferees on this important topic, but my workload is too heavy to do any real participation at this point. Keep me in the loop as you circulate material on the Future of Work. Best wishes on your conference. Bill Bridges (Author of Future of Work)

The fact is that the above can now be thought of mainly as an archive. And while we shall maintain it as long as direct emails come in, we are already in the process of shifting 100% of all communications into the new channels. So do take the time to go to Instructions for Joining and Using the Discussion Panels so that you can fully profit from these next stages of the conference.

If you have already registered, you can access it directly from here: New Discussion Panels.
