Hardware and Software Requirements: Tips for Participants

Hardware Configurations and Recommendations

The last thing we want to do is to cause you discomfort or irritation about your computer setup, but in a drill such as this it is important. A few guiding thoughts on this follow.

For better or worse, the world is standardizing to PC's, and while the other stuff can be used for all sorts of handy and creative things, when it comes to working with others in a Web environment, it is really far easier to work from a PC frame.

Recommended Minimum Configuration for Conference Participation

A fast 486 with Windows 95 and at least 16 Meg of RAM (at least!), certainly no less than a 14.4k modem, a 14" screen with at least 65K colors, and nothing less than NetScape of Internet Explorer 2.0. Top that up with a copy of MS Office 95 or comparable, and such a bare bones configuration will, with lots of forbearance on your part, do the basic job. Bear in mind though that this is basically five year old technology in a world that rolls over quite radically something between six to eighteen months, and so expect no miracles from it. If you are going to use this new alphabet, this new Great Library, you are going to have to upgrade. In the meantime, when you sit down to what you have on your desk today, it will a good idea to have something to read close at hand.

A Better Configuration:

A Pentium of at least 133 mHz, 32 Mo. of RAM, at least a 28.8 modem, a 15" screen with a good graphics card capable of displaying millions of colors, and the 3.0 or better editions of either of the two dominant browsers. A sound card and microphone will come in handy. For those of you who may find this a bit too much to ask, we would remind you that this is two year-plus old technology and that the street price for such a rig today is well less than $2,000.

What You Really Should Have on Your Desk (when you get around to it... next time):

A fast Pentium (200 mHz or up), 64-plus Mo. of RAM, 4 or more gigabytes of fast hard disk capacity, ISDN lines or better ( cheaper and easier to get every day), a 17" screen (20-21" is a LOT better), sound card, mike, videoconferencing rig, the latest editions of the browsers (4.0)... and participating in this conference, for instance, can be almost as agreeable and unfrustrating as opening up a good book. The price: in the area of $5,000 and dropping fast.

Software and Utilities

Our web pages were designed for browsers that support the HTML 3 standard, and extensions to the HTML 3 standard. If your browser does not support these, you may want to get a browser that does. Netscape is a good place to start as they are presently distributing the beta version (4.0, Communicator) of their excellent browser at no charge at the Netscape Website. For the same price you can have Microsoft's fine Internet Explorer 3 or 4.0 (we have used the latter for these pages, controlling with Netscape as well to ensure a reasonable level of readability), which you will find at Internet Explorer website.

If you are going to work with the Web on a daily basis, have a look at the latest version of Microsoft Office 97. We hate the idea of giving Bill Gates any more money, but this strong package quickly paid for itself around here. Have a look at details at the Microsoft Office home page.

Information on utilities that can help in accessing the library (zipping/compression, encoding, viewers) can be found in the Electronic Library section here.
